Hi, my name is Priscilla McIntire and I want to talk to you guys a little bit today about the gospel. What is it and why do we need it?
You know, God is a wonderful, awesome, perfect, good, and just God. But, the fact that he is just is a bad thing for us, because every single one of us are sinners. You know, Romans 3:23 says that everyone falls short of the glory of God. Psalms 7:11 says that God is a righteous judge, a judge that displays his wrath everyday.
If you went into a court and you saw that the judge was up there letting criminals go left and right, regardless of whether they were guilty or not. You would not think that he was a very good judge. In fact, you would likely demand that he sentence these criminals correctly. You may even think that he himself is acting in a criminal manner and should be sentenced himself. Especially, if you were the victim of one of the criminals this unjust judge had set free.
Well, you know, God is the judge of the entire world. And, the penalty for one sin–even one in your entire life–is death. Most people think, “Well, I am a good person. I work everyday, I don’t beat my kids, and I help other people when I can. God won’t send me to hell”. However, that is not true. Unlike the bad judge in the scenario discussed earlier, God is just and righteous judge and because of that he will sentence each and every one of us exactly as we deserve! That means that if you have sinned even once in your lifetime, then you are guilty and you deserve death!
The gospel (meaning the “good news”) is that God loved you! And, he does love you! And, he sent his son, Jesus Christ… Who was both man, and God in the flesh–the only person who has ever lived a perfect and sinless life. He came to earth, suffered, and died on a cross for you. He did this in order to pay your penalty for everyone who will believe in him. That includes you! No matter who you are, or what you have done! He has paid the penalty!
Three days after his crucifixion, Christ arose from the grave! Thus, proving that he was who he claimed to be. And, a proof that the check he wrote with his life, cleared! Now, the payment having been accepted, Jesus spent a little time on earth being seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses, then he ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the father.
